Are You Prepared? 4 Areas Of Your Home That Need Fire Extinguishers

Home & Garden Blog

If you've installed smoke detectors in every room of your home, you've made a good start towards home protection. But, if you don't have fire extinguishers, you still have a ways to go. If you have one fire extinguisher, you may think you're protected. Unfortunately, that's not the case. If you only have one fire extinguisher in your home, you might not be able to get to it in time. In a fire emergency, every second counts. To make sure you're fully protected, you need fire extinguishers in all the vulnerable areas of your home. Here are four areas that need a fire extinguisher.

Kitchen

If you don't have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, that's the first place you need to start. The kitchen is one of the most vulnerable rooms in your home, especially where fires are concerned. You never know when a grease fire is going to start. When it does, you need to be ready with the fire extinguisher. If you have a gas stove, you also need to be worried about other types of kitchen fires. For instance, kitchen towels or clothing can catch fire when they come in contact with open flames. Be prepared with at least one fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

Living Room

If you have a fireplace in your living room or use candles on a regular basis, you need to have a fire extinguisher in that area, as well. Hot embers and ash can escape from the fireplace. If the embers and ash come in contact with furniture, carpeting, or curtains, you could end up with a fire in your home. Candles can also pose a fire risk in your home, especially if they're left unattended. When you keep a fire extinguisher in the living room, you can react quickly to emergency fire situations.

Garage

If you're like most people, you tackle a lot of projects right in your garage. Many of those projects can increase your risk of fire. This is especially true where woodworking, welding, and auto repairs are concerned. Before you're faced with garage fire, make sure you're prepared. Equip your garage with at least one fire extinguisher.

Backyard

If you're like most people, you don't have a fire extinguisher in your backyard. But, you definitely need one, especially if you do a lot of barbecuing. You never know when your barbecue is going to get out of control. When it does, you need to be able to react quickly. The best way to do that is with a fire extinguisher. To keep small backyard fires from getting out of hand, keep at least one fire extinguisher on your patio at all times.
