As small bugs that like to make homes inside of practically any wood source, they can cause a lot of damage if given the chance. If you are a homeowner, it's important that you know a few of the basic things about termites like what to look out for, how to prevent them, and if you find any, how to get them under control. How Can You Spot Termites?
Termites aren't going to come knocking on your door and announce themselves. But, there are a few other ways that you can detect them:
You See Them Around: A lot of times, homeowners spot termites either around their front door or window sill. If you notice any of these small bugs flying around, then you know that you have a problem.
Solid Wood that Doesn't Sound so Solid: When you knock on solid wood, it should sound that way, but if you knock on a wooden structure like pillars on your front porch and they sound hollow, then you may have a termite problem.
Bubbled Paint: When termites start to feed on the inside of your walls, they can eat all the way through the wood structure and start to get into the paint which can make it start to bubble or crack.
You See Mud Tubes Outside: If you see small tubes that almost look like lines of dirt along the exterior walls, beams, or crawl spaces of your house, then these may be termite tubes. Termites like to spread out and will make these long tunnels to wherever they are trying to go to.
How Can You Treat Termites?
Yes, you can get a little bit of vinegar and start spraying the termites, but that's not going to get you anywhere. What you really want to do is call a termite control company and have them come out to your house. These companies will find the termites, get rid of the termites, and help you prevent them from coming back again. Depending on how severe the damage is, you may have to have more clean up done than you might expect.
