Tips for Finding an Apartment That Is Family-Friendly

Home & Garden Blog

Renting your first apartment when you're in college is a lot different than renting an apartment when you have children. Selecting the right apartment for a family can take some time, but it is well worth the effort and is sure to make all of the members of your household happier. It is always a good idea to thoroughly vet potential apartment complexes before you sign any type of lease and move in with your family—no one wants to be legally tied to an apartment that is not a good fit. Use the following tips to help you find the perfect kid-friendly apartment.

Size

It is always important to pay attention to the size and floor plan of a potential apartment for rent. Most families want multiple bedrooms, but living space and storage areas are also a high priority for a lot of people. The size of your family will also play a part in what size apartment you will need—many apartment complexes have rules in place that limit the number of people who can live in an apartment of different sizes due to fire codes. For example, a family of six may not be allowed to rent a one bedroom apartment—they would most likely need at least a two bedroom apartment.

Atmosphere

A good rule of thumb when renting an apartment for your family is to look at a complex that has a large number of families already living there. Take the time to thoroughly tour an apartment complex before making a decision. While looking at the individual unit that you're interested in renting is important, also look for signs of other families living on the premise. When a large number of families is already living in a complex it is a good sign that it is family-friendly, and as a bonus, you and your kids are more likely to make new friends.

Amenities

The amenities offered at a complex can make living there much more appealing for families. Some apartment complexes have small playgrounds and grassy areas where kids can play. If you live in a hot climate, living at an apartment complex with a large pool can be wonderful for families—just make sure that the pool has a tall fence around the perimeter and a locking gate. One of the most important amenities to look for when searching for a family-friendly apartment is a laundry room onsite, or even better, a washer and dryer in the unit.
