The Basics Of Hardscaping

Home & Garden Blog

Hardscaping is a term that refers to the use of "hard" fixtures in your yard, such as patios, decks, pathways, walls, and archways. Anything that you want to add to your yard that is not a living thing, and thus part of the 'landscape' is part of the 'hardscape' of your yard. If you want to upgrade your yard, adding hardscaping elements to your yard can help really pull your yard together.

Define How You Want Your Yard to Look

Before you start adding hardscaping elements to your yard, you need to define what you want your yard to look like.

Ask yourself what you want your yard to look like and how you want to use your yard. That can help you determine what type of hardscaping elements you need to add to your yard.

Do you want to have a yard full of pathways that you can walk through and enjoy the landscaping? Do you want your yard to be more of a central hangout and BBQ space for your family?

For example, if you want to show off your landscaping, pathways made with stamped concrete or gravel, as well as archways, may be the right type of hardscaping for your yard. Or, if you are looking for a place for your family to hang out, a large deck and patio space, with a small basketball court and a water feature for the kids to splash around and cool off in, may be more the look that you want for your yard.

Map Out the Elements You Want to Add to Your Yard

Once you determine how you want to use your yard, it is time to map out what you want to add to your yard. Mapping out the hardscaping features that you want to add to your yard will allow you to slowly incorporate these elements into your yard over time.

You can go the old fashion way and draw out your ideas on paper, or you can use an application that helps you map out your dream backyard.

You can also hire a landscaper to create a blueprint of what you want your yard to look like eventually. Working with a landscaper is a great choice because a landscaper will be able to help you plan for structural needs, such as landscaping, while helping you achieve your ideal yard at the same time. A landscaper will also be able to inform you of any landscape maintenance that will be required throughout the process.

If you want to upgrade how your yard looks and feels, hardscaping can help bring your yard to the next level. First you need to figure out what you want from your yard, then you need to map out exactly what you want to add. This will give you a plan so that you can strategically add hardscaping elements over time to your yard.
