Four Reasons Not To Get Rid Of Your Mattress When Dealing With Bed Bugs

Home & Garden Blog

It's a common misconception that the first thing you need to do when you discover bed bugs in your home is to destroy your mattress. However, this is not the case. In fact, you can save your mattress while still getting rid of bed bugs completely from your home. Here are four reasons you shouldn't give up your mattress:

  1. Bed Bugs Aren't Just in the Mattress: While bed bugs do tend to live underneath mattresses, they can also live in the carpet, couch, dresser drawers, and more. If you just get rid of your mattress, you aren't resolving the actual problem since there are many other places for bed bugs to hide. In fact, your bed bugs could even be hiding in your bed frame, headboard or even your nightstand. So, as you can see it's not just the mattress that is the main problem.
  2. Bed Bugs Multiply Quickly: Once bed bugs have a home and food source, they can multiply quickly. Once this starts to happen, they are going to need more space to live, which is why they branch out from the mattress rather quickly if this was their first source of comfort. For this reason, it's important to call for extermination at the first signs that there are possible bed bugs in your home, but also keep in mind that at this point, they are definitely probably in more areas than just the mattress.
  3. You Need to Sleep: No matter where you sleep in your home, you are still going to have to deal with bed bugs, which means waking up with bites on you. Sleeping on your mattress at this point is definitely better than nothing since you will still be dealing with the same problem no matter what. If you are uncomfortable living with bed bugs while waiting for the exterminators to get to your home, then simply stay at a friend's house or hotel, but keep your mattress so that once the problem is eliminated, you can go back to living as normal.
  4. Save Some Money: A new mattress is going to be expensive. You don't want to have to buy a whole new mattress if it's not really worth it, especially if you have recently purchased that mattress. Save yourself some money and keep that mattress. Get rid of the bed bugs, not your actual bed.

When you know some of the reasons to keep your mattress while dealing with bed bugs, you can quickly separate yourself from the common misconception that you are supposed to get rid of it. For more information, check with a company like Bisaillon's Rid All Termite & Pest Solutions today.
